Chequered Flag ADI Instructor Training Course

Our course is tailor made to fit around your commitments to work and family life. All training is in our own cars and unlike many larger organisations is on a 1:1 basis unless otherwise requested.

Chequered Flag will provide training materials which are approved by the D.V.S.A. The cost of these materials is included in the cost of the course..

Legal Requirements

Before starting an ADI training course, the Trainee must satisfy the following legal requirements:

  1. Eyesight requirement, i.e. be able to read a number plate at 27.5m/90ft
  2. Hold a full UK or European Union (EU/European Economic Area (EEA)) unrestricted car driving licence
  3. To have held it for a total of at least four out of the past six years prior to entering the Register after qualifying
  4. No disqualification from driving at any time in the four years prior to being entered in the Register
  5. Be a “fit and proper” person to have your name entered in the Register. All convictions, motoring and non-motoring, will be taken into account when your suitability to be entered on the Register is assessed. You will be required to have an enhanced level criminal record check. The information from this check will be used to assess the suitability of persons applying for inclusion on the Register of Approved Driving Instructors
  6. The Trainee must pass the two qualifying practical examinations (Parts 2 & 3) within two years of passing the theory examination (Part 1) and apply for registration within 12 months of passing the final part of the examination

Part 1: Theory & Hazard Perception

In the Theory and Hazard Perception Test you have to answer 100 multiple-choice questions from a selection of 4 bands:

  • Road Procedure
  • Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians, mechanical knowledge
  • The driving test, disabilities, law
  • Publications, instructional techniques

The overall pass mark is 85%, however you need to ensure you have an overall knowledge in all subjects and score no less than 80% in all 4 bands.

This is followed by the Hazard Perception element which consists of 14 video clips on the computer. There is a maximum score of 5 points with one clip containing two scoreable hazards. The pass mark is 57 out of a possible 75 marks.

You must Pass both parts of this Test at the same time before you can proceed to Part 2.

Chequered Flag’s Course: Part 1 (5 hours)

Signing up for course and introduction will take about an hour. This will be followed by 5 hours of instruction. Training for Part 1 comprises home study and in-house tuition by your Chequered Flag Trainer. Formal instruction and practice, including a Mock Theory Test and Hazard Perception Test, is arranged with your trainer at suitable times. Throughout your training Chequered Flag will provide training records to help you keep track of your personal development.

Part 2: Driving Ability

This starts with an eyesight check: You will be asked to read a number plate at a distance of 27.5 metres with glasses or contact lenses if you normally wear them. You will then be asked several questions about vehicle safety on a ‘show me/tell me’ basis. More in-depth knowledge is expected than that of someone taking the L-Test.
The driving test lasts for about 1 hour.  During the drive you will be assessed on your ability to control the car in a safe, and systematic fashion showing sound knowledge of road procedure, expert handling, anticipation, judgment and consideration. The routes used for the test will include roads which may carry heavy and/or fast moving traffic, they will also cover a range of road and traffic conditions, including urban and rural conditions.

You will be expected to carry out various manoeuvres of the type which you will later teach to your pupils.  To achieve a pass, a very high standard is required.  You need to score 6 or fewer driving faults, and no serious or dangerous faults.

Chequered Flag's Course: Part 2 (20 hours)

The Part 2 Training Course consists of 20 hours In-Car Training in two or three hour sessions, including a Practical Mock Test. Your experienced Chequered Flag trainer will lead you through the whole DVSA syllabus so that by the end of the training you will feel confident about taking the test. Throughout your training Chequered Flag will provide a personal progress record after each session to help you keep track of your personal development.

Part 3: Instructional Ability Test

The ADI Part 3 test has changed from last year, 23rd December 2017, and has now become a much more realistic assessment of a trainee instructor’s ability to teach. It places emphasis on the driver and the trainee driving instructor, working together sharing responsibility to achieve the designated outcome/lesson. The DVSA hopes that this new approach will help learners become “safer and more responsible drivers”.

During your instructor ability test the DVSA examiner will observe you delivering a “Client Centred” driving lesson lasting about an hour to one of your pupils. (Your pupil can be a learner or a fully qualified licence holder/driver) and assess your ability to tailor the training to that of your pupil’s learning goals and needs from the back seat, rather than the old style Part 3 test where the examiner pretended (Role Play) to be a pupil sitting in the driver’s seat.

Throughout the test, you need to be aware of your pupil’s actions and surroundings to ensure a safe learning environment is maintained. Any critical mistakes made by the pupil must be addressed in a timely manner. The examiner will look for evidence that you meet the national standard for driver and rider training.

What you’ll be marked on

You’ll be marked on 17 areas of competence that are grouped into 3 categories:

  • lesson planning
  • risk management
  • teaching and learning strategies

The 17 areas of competence are listed in the ADI part 3 test report form, which the examiner will fill in at the end of your test. You’ll get a score from 0 to 3 for each of the 17 competencies, which are added up to work out if you’ve passed the test, and what your grade will be. The test lasts approximately about 1 hour.

Chequered Flag's Training: Part 3 (40 hours)

The Part 3 Training Course consists of 40 hours in three or four hour sessions and includes mock tests. Chequered Flag’s experienced trainers will teach you all the competencies which you require for the test and give you confidence in your teaching abilities for this, the most demanding part of the ADI qualification. Throughout your training Chequered Flag will provide a personal progress record after each session to help you keep track of your personal development.
